Abriachan Trails at Abriachan Forest

It would be easy to miss this great walk from Abriachan on your visit to Loch Ness, but if you go off the beaten track and up into the hills surrounding Loch Ness, you will be rewarded not just with great views of Loch Ness and the Great Glen, but also some unexpected pieces of art in the middle of a wild landscape!

Abriachan Trails are well-marked woodland and moorland paths suitable for all abilities. There are a number of different trails to explore, from a short stroll to longer walks.

In order to get to the starting point, follow the A82 from Inverness in the direction of Fort William. After about 10 miles from Inverness city centre you will see the signpost to Abriachan to your right – follow this very steep road uphill until you reach the Abriachan Forest car park just after Loch Laide. It is not recommended to attempt this road if conditions are wintery or icy!

At the car park you will find toilet and picnic facilities as well as an information board on the various trails. For cyclists there are also mountain bike trails available for all cycling abilities.

Pick the trail you would like to do, all of them are well signposted. No matter which trail you choose, there is lots to explore! As well as amazing views over Loch Ness, the Great Glen, Meall Fuar-mhonaidh and even Ben Wyvis you will also find various sculptures and points of interest all along the way. There is a replica Bronze Age hut, carved benches for a picnic, sculptures, a whisky still, a reconstructed shieling and a treehouse! Plenty of opportunities for a unique Instagram photo (don’t forget to use #visitnessie !).

Abriachan trails are perfect for the whole family, as the many places to explore keep things interesting for the young ones. As it’s a bit off the beaten track you’re unlikely to find big crowds and the open hillside and moorland will give you a real taste of Highland wilderness!
