Scottish singer songwriter and producer JONO started recording songs at age 13. By his mid-20’s he had produced his earliest material, gigged in countless bands, and produced for local, signed and charting artists. Due to inherit the family manufacturing business, he walked away from this secure future to produce his Debut Solo Album. Rounded yet rugged, refined yet raw, he launched “Sentimental Anarchist” to critical acclaim, built around his infectious voice, melodies and unique guitar style. It was single handedly written and recorded by JONO in his Glasgow flat.
“One of the finest singer songwriters to emerge in recent years” – Jim Gellatly, John Peel Award Winning DJ ***** “The album was blinding; one of the best I have heard in ages” – Carol Cunningham, Music News Scotland
He packed out the 450 capacity Classic Grand for the debut album launch, then embarked on his first UK tour. Each day, BBC and local radio stations got him on the air prior to evening gigs. Feathers in JONO’s cap include XFM Artist, Album, and Single of the Week, reaching #83 most watched UK Music Video on YouTube for “Stuck in the City”, and Winner of UK Undiscovered 2010. He has been compared to other singer songwriters like Paolo Nutini, Kelly Jones of the Stereophonics, John Mayer, and Jeff Buckley.
In 2009 on a skiing break JONO suffered a violent fall, coming inches from death and shattering his left shoulder. He flew home for an emergency operation, with no guarantee of ever being able to play guitar again. But, as fate would have it, six months later he had fully recovered. He has since performed on bills with artists such as Newton Faulkner, Ben Harper, KT Tunstall, Beth Ditto, Cast, Rodrigo Y Gabriela, Macy Gray, Erykah Badu, Jamie Lidell. His live shows have seen him play at some major music festivals, travelling all over Scotland, England, Wales, France, Spain, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Malta, and the USA.
Following a nine year gap since his debut album, during which time he had toured relentlessly, returned to education to top up his music production skills, produced for other bands and artists, all the while fighting depression and anxiety in an ongoing battle with merciless perfectionism and crippling self-doubt, JONO finally launched his second solo album “Culture Is Your Cult”. A true songwriter’s album of stylistically diverse songs, but somehow, a common strand brings the collection together. This time, having made his point on Album#1, JONO wanted to open up Album#2 to collaborations with other artists with whom he has shared his musical journey.
