The easiest way to get around is by car, of course, but you can also leave the car at home and visit by our Inverness attractions by bus (check timetables on the Traveline Scotland website before you set off) or book an organised tour.
So read on! Our list below is some of our top picks of places to visit and things to do near Inverness…
The seaside town of Nairn is a short 15-minute drive away from Inverness and is a favourite day trip destination for many locals. Stroll along Nairn beach or go for a coffee in one of the many cafés – if you’re visiting during the winter months, you can still sit outside with your coffee and cake at James’ Café near the putting green, hot water bottles and blankets are provided! If you’re travelling by car, why not make the most of your day by also visiting nearby Cawdor Castle and Fort George?
Aviemore & The Cairngorms
Aviemore in the Cairngorms National Park is a must-do excursion for outdoor enthusiasts. Apart from walking and cycling you can also test your skills at Treezone, try clay pigeon shooting, quad bike trekking or a Segway adventure at Rothiemurchus Estate or take to the slopes in winter.
You will also find a great choice of restaurants and Cafés, of course, including the innovative Mountain Café, which brings New Zealand style coffee and food to the Highlands.
The Black Isle
You may not know that the Black Isle, just north of Inverness, is in fact neither black or an island! It is a peninsula and the “black” is said to refer to the dark, fertile soil, which is used for farming up to this day. Take a tour around the Black Isle’s country roads and stop at some of its attractions, such as dolphin spotting at Chanonry Point, a wildlife cruise with Ecoventures in Cromarty or a visit to the Black Isle Brewery.
