Explore beautiful beaches within easy driving distance from Inverness
Last week the Inverness and Loch Ness area enjoyed lovely summer weather with temperatures over 20 degrees, so our thought turned to summer activities…and what could be more summery than a day out on the beach?!
There are several lovely beaches within a short drive of Inverness – we were going to give you a “Top 5”, but couldn’t really decide which beach is the best, so you will just have to make up your own mind after you have visited them all!
An all-time favourite beach for Invernessians on a hot sunny day is Nairn beach. This lovely sandy beach is a short 15 minute drive away along the A96 Inverness to Aberdeen road. There is plenty of free parking available at Nairn links and The Maggot, parking is well signposted from the main road. Why not take a picnic and find a quiet spot among the dunes?
North of Inverness on the Black Isle, Rosemarkie beach is also worth a visit. Driving time from Inverness is about 30 minutes and on the way there you pass famous Chanonry Point, the best spot to see the Moray Firth bottlenose dolphins! Rosemarkie is perfect for exploring the many rockpools and you can take a break at the beach café.
If you head further north on the A9 you come to the village of Dornoch with its famous golf course and fantastic sandy beach – have a look at our Dornoch car tour here.
But for a lovely sandy beach you don’t necessarily have to head for the coast! A 45-minute drive from Inverness on the A9 south will take you to Aviemore and Loch Morlich with its sandy beach and watersports centre. Here you can combine a day at the beach with learning a new activity, like canoeing or kayaking.
But what about Loch Ness itself you may ask…does it not have a beach? Of course it does! Dores beach may be a pebble beach rather than sand, but it offers spectacular views down Loch Ness, a lovely walking route to Tor Point and a chance to visit the well-known Dores Inn for a meal or refreshments – just perfect for a day out!
