Get active in Inverness and Loch Ness!

Are you brave enough to try some new and exciting activities?

Because of the spectacular mountains, the tumbling waters and the vastness of the great outdoors, the Highlands of Scotland has become a playground for outdoor pursuits and visitors have been coming to Inverness and Loch Ness for walking and cycling for decades.

But apart from these “traditional” outdoor activities, the area offers a lot more that is new and most definitely exciting! Have you heard of White Water Sledging, Weaselling or Gorge Walking before? Well, you can do all of these around Inverness and Loch Ness – be prepared to get wet…and maybe just a little bit scared!

I first tried White Water Sledging in New Zealand a few years ago – imagine White Water Rafting but without the raft - you really couldn’t get any closer to nature than hurtling over the rapids of a Highland river clinging on to your little buoyancy aid!

The many rivers, gorges and craggy hillsides in our area make it perfect for weaselling (you will be the “weasel” wriggling through gaps between rocks while you explore!), gorge walking and gorge swimming.

You’re not keen on water but are still looking for something adrenaline-fuelled and exciting to do?

No problem! How about quad biking, 4x4 driving or abseiling? Not to mention hiking, mountain biking and hill climbing…

Phew, I’m exhausted just thinking about so many activities – between all this and the fresh Highland air you are almost guaranteed to sleep like a baby once you have returned to your accommodation at night to put your feet up!

You’ve still got some energy left and are looking to take part in a sporting event? For runners there is the Loch Ness Marathon and Festival of Running that takes place the last Sunday in September every year and for cyclists there is the Etape Loch Ness every April…and for the really adventurous there is the Beast Race at Aldourie on Loch Ness, an obstacle race that includes a dip in the famous Loch!

If you have photos of you and your family or friends taking part in any of these great activities, we’d love to see them on our Facebook page! Have a look at our Activities section and have fun out there!
