Details

The Highland Archive Centre is responsible for collecting and preserving the historic record of the Highlands. The archives date from the 14th century to the present day and consist of original documents in different formats from charters, minutes, correspondence and accounts to maps, photographs and films.

The main series of official records are those created by the Highland Council and its predecessors, the former Regional, District burgh and County records of Inverness, Nairn, Ross and Cromarty and Sutherland. Examples from our collections include;

Education record including log books and admission records for over 300 Highland schools
Poor relief records
Valuation Rolls
Church Records
Family and Estate papers
Records of Clan Societies
Police Archives (Northern Constabulary) 1858 - 1992
Highland Health Board Archives dating from 1798
The Tartan Archive (a collection of records relating to the history of tartan)
Large Scale Ordnance Survey maps of the Highlands dating from the 1860s

The Centre is the only venue in the Highlands with access to ScotandsPeople Network, providing access to a wealth of historic records from across the whole of Scotland including Census Returns from 1841 to 1911; Old Parish Registers up to 1854; and Births, Marriages and Deaths (from January 1855). The cost to access the ScotlandsPeople is £15 per day or part day and copies of historic images can be printed for a small fee.

The Highland Archive Centre is open to all and our knowledgeable staff are always on hand to assist you. One to one consultations with our family history staff are available to book every day, and they can help you to research your family history, with access to Scottish, English and Welsh Civil Registration records and many other types of online resources. Please see our website for charges and to make a booking.
